Having been on the wharf waving the flares the previous year; this time I just watched on from the ship as we said farewell to Rothera after a wonderful 18 months there. Here we're leaving the 20-odd base complement to 7 months of winter together. |

Nice pic Jenny, I never saw this event from this perspective. 2 years I was setting flares off as the Branny disappeared, but as I left mid-season I missed the last call fireworks from the ship.

Although it's impressive enough thing to see. It was a very sad moment really; I remember trying my hardest to fight off the tears as I knew I was leaving, permanently, a uniquely wonderful place I felt so at home with! Although that is probably true no matter which way you leave Antarctica!
