These two adolescent male Elephant Seals are each 3m (10ft) long and weigh around 2 tons. Their fighting is not just playful and can result in injuries, but these two are merely honing their skills until they eventually grow large enough to challenge the 'beachmaster' adult male for supremacy - he is nearly twice their size! The surrounding King Penguins are unconcerned by the noise and commotion - but they do keep well out of the way. For once, we also needed no reminder of the '5 metre rule' on approaching the local wildlife! [Macquarie Island, 3 Feb 05]
