The 'Krasin', breaking a channel for supply ships to reach the US McMurdo Station on Ross Island. This powerful icebreaker was chartered in 2004 by the US Govt from its Russian owners (after the 'Polar Star' had developed mechanical problems), in order to keep the 40-mile ice channel open throughout the 04-05 Austral summer. The Russians were only too delighted to help (the $$$'s were good as well), and our own Russian crew told us that their compatriots were enjoying cruising up and down the Sound showing off their skills to the Americans!
