You must admit, the Aussie base is the nicest, but what is that big ball?? I know the English are crazy about their soccer but isn't that taking it a bit too far?? )

I guess the big ball contains a radar-type antenna that swivels through any direction while protected from the elements by the spherical shell.
As for being the nicest, it's a bit of an ugly-bugs-ball, I haven't seen any Antarctic base that I'd call attractive or elegant - or even very co-ordinated, extra bits just get added on according to the latest design.
