The 16,000 tonne Russian icebreaker 'Kapitan Khlebnikov' breaking a passage through 6ft thick sea ice, about 20 miles off the coast of Oates Land. Viewed from one of the ship's 2 helos, the sheer immensity and remoteness of Antarctica really becomes apparent. (It's most unlikely that there were any other human beings at all within 400 miles of us at this point!) [29 Jan 05] |
