Blue icebergs are a relative rarity; formed at the bottom of a floating ice shelf, the intense water pressure forces the air bubbles out of the ice giving the berg its beautiful blue colour when it breaks off and comes to the surface. I spotted this berg from a Zodiac off the Italian research base at Terra Nova Bay in the Ross Sea. [27 Jan 05]

I like the white icing bergs with icicles "frame" as much as the blue berg. What gear did you use Mike? digital or film?

I finally switched from 35mm to digital in 2004; for my Antarctic voyage into the Ross Sea I used a Canon EOS 300D, mainly with a 28-300mm zoom and polariser. I had no gear problems re the low temperatures (even in -35C wind-chill at Cape Royds), although battery life was noticeably shorter than usual. Large memory cards meant that I could bracket exposures; I also found that the white balance often needed some fine tuning, especially when shooting bergs in bright sunlight and to compensate for flash usage inside the historic huts.
Overall, I was chuffed with the results, especially as very few of my shots needed much digital fiddling within Photoshop - I guess I'm still a purist / luddite at heart!
