Nice pic Jenny, we didn't get crabeater pups around Signy (well I think they did rarely, but I never saw any) - I'm struck by how similar the pup is to a Weddell Seal pup.

This was quite a rare event for Rothera too, as they are usually born out on ice floes. We were so lucky as we actually had this pup born within metres of a weddel and her pup, so we got to watch them both grow up. It was a perfect opportunity to compare them. Although they look so similar, the way they bring up there pups are so very different. Mainly, the weddel taught her pup to swim around 10 days old. The crabeater on the other hand was separated form her pup by a male at about 3 weeks. The pup was then left to find the sea herself!
