Poster: drummy
(see this users gallery)
Taken in July 1971 shortly after the return of the sun this shows the winter sea ice surrounding Stonington Island looking to the north-west. The ice provided the opportunity to give the dogs a good run-out during their period of enforced idleness between the autumn and spring journeys. It was notoriously unstable and liable to disappear out into Marguerite Bay if there was a good blow from the east. The framework in the photo is the old 1950s era Stonington base. |
