The first overland crossing of Antarctica, succeeding in the 1950's what Sir Ernest Shackleton had attempted to do in his ill-fated expedition in 1914-1917. British Explorer Vivian Fuchs and New Zealander Edmund Hilary (the first man to climb Everest) led the expedition which took place during the IGY - International Geophysical Year.
