The South Pole, with the flags of the twelve original signatory nations to the Antarctic Treaty.
The red-and-white striped pole is the ceremonial pole, a simple pole by the white sign marks the geographic pole. At the time of this photo, the two markers were only about 10m apart. However, the ice moves about 10m per year, and a new geographic marker is installed every January 1st. Besides this, the new station was dedicated on 12 January and the ceremonial pole was then moved for better photo opportunities - so now the two poles are much further apart.
