There are many pictures in this section of snow-blocking and ice-blocking to get fresh water, but this one has to show the most extreme form. All the factors of difficulties in getting ice from a glacial source apply, with the addition that this one is taking place at an actual glacier snout - the Orwell Glacier about a mile or so from base as the skidoo drives.
Particularly difficult in hacking man-moveable sized lumps from building sized pieces of ice in the first place with the additional difficulty of then loading them onto a sledge, driving them back to base and unloading them in the melt tank.
It happened as there was no alternative form of water as snow for blocking or nearer ice available.

2007 on
the 60th anniversary of Signy Island
Base: 60°43'S 045°36'W. Thank you to those who sent their treasured memories of their time in
Antarctica and allowed them to be made into a commemorative cd
and then placed here on the web. My commentary is taken from notes I was sent with the pictures if any. Corrections or additions, please The reunion weekend was 14-16 September 2007. |
