One of those al fresco - because-we-can type events.
My guess is that it was better in prospect than the reality. Like the barbecues we used to have sometimes, even if it wasn't too cold, the plates would get cold, there were no benches or tables, it was cold to sit anywhere and the food was always cold by the time you got it too. maybe I'm just an old misery guts though.
(I bet their tea was cold by the time they drank it).
