Fur seals were rare visitors to Signy in the 1940's through to about the 1960's and pups an even rarer sight. By the 1980's there were several thousands each summer - mainly juvenile males over-spilling from South Georgia. By the early 1990's 10,000 or more seals were present on Signy at the peak time in the summer.
