Probably for the extraction of small soil and moss dwelling animals from terrestrial samples taken around the island. Each funnel will be a single sample from a particular location and time. The cans suspended above the funnels are electric lights which cause the animals to make their way downwards to the bottom of the funnel where they can be collected in the small beakers below.
