What you see behind the seal is the same all around, I can only assume that there must have been an air of panic when this seal had to break its way through a few inches of ice from below to get a breath. By the time we came across it was quite calm and relaxed however and as disinterested in us as we were interested in it.
The hole itself caused us some consternation as if we approached it, the ice around it sank somewhat and the sea started to spill out over the ice, we'd have felt safer if it hadn't done that.
