Penguins have the densest arrangements of feathers of any birds, though this is somewhat misleading as most other birds can fly and so have larger feathers of a different sort. Penguin feathers are more hair-like than traditional feather-like and give excellent insulation against the cold. They do have "directionality" though and aren't any where near as good if ruffled, so in strong winds with blowing snow like this, these adélie penguins get down low, face the wind and make themselves as short and compact as they can manage.

| This picture is one of a collection assembled in
2007 on
the 60th anniversary of Signy Island
Base: 60°43'S 045°36'W. Thank you to those who sent their treasured memories of their time in
Antarctica and allowed them to be made into a commemorative cd
and then placed here on the web. My commentary is taken from notes I was sent with the pictures if any. Corrections or additions, please The reunion weekend was 14-16 September 2007. |
