This was crevasse rescue techniques or practising going down into a crevasse and out again in case you or someone you were with fell down one. All very exciting when it's slow and controlled, but looking at the lumps of ice that are sticking out in all directions, a journey into one "in anger" unless quickly arrested wouldn't be such fun.
