"It's a big wooden thing outside!" The wooden surface these Fids are standing on is the "plan". Originally laid down by the Norwegian whalers in the 1920's the plan was where whales were pulled out of the sea to be flensed, but mainly it was the source of the oldest and most popular joke on base.
