Signy only had a relatively small number of dogs and only for a relatively short time. They were there for recreational purposes as Signy had never been a place where much exploration could be undertaken. The lack of sea-ice for much of the year and rugged terrain meant that sledge travel was restricted to a fairly short time of the year and a restricted range.
