To save losing too much heat, mutts would pull one leg up inside their feathers when it got really cold.
I didn't appreciate this for some time and was convinced that there was a one-legged mutt that lived around the base, when I confided this in my fellow winterers, they laughed uproariously thus advancing my knowledge of bird biology.
