Usually all this sea between us and the island 2-3 miles distant and about 30 miles long is on the move and more commonly rough than not. Now though it is all perfectly flat and calm and covered with a delicate but solid ice layer maybe an inch thick (2.5cm) that you can easily poke a finger through that covers tens, probably hundreds of square miles. That's the great thing about the temperature falling below freezing, the whole world changes in such an impressive way.

| This picture is one of a collection assembled in
2007 on
the 60th anniversary of Signy Island
Base: 60°43'S 045°36'W. Thank you to those who sent their treasured memories of their time in
Antarctica and allowed them to be made into a commemorative cd
and then placed here on the web. My commentary is taken from notes I was sent with the pictures if any. Corrections or additions, please The reunion weekend was 14-16 September 2007. |
