Hugh Anderson, Falkland Islander, 18 years old at the time he wintered on Signy. He would later spend many years as a seaman on the John Biscoe.
Taken nearly 40 years before I spent my time on Signy and 60 years before I started to put this collection of photographs together. The rarity and expense of film at the time meant that there are not many pictures from the early days and many are more formal like this one and the next few.
One thing struck me while arranging these pictures was that despite the variety of haircuts and clothing that is seen across the years, these people strangers as they are to me seem somehow familiar. Looking at their surroundings and knowing the kind of life they led while in this place, I can imagine having wintered with them.
