By the mid 1970's Signy base had grown to a collection of buildings with the pale yellow "Plastic Hut" (an ex GPO telephone exchange apparently) erected in 1963 as the accommodation block on the top floor. The bottom floor of the plastic hut and other buildings were a collection of laboratories, workshops and storage spaces.
