Copyright - Crown, expired - picture taken 1966
Buildings funnel wind in particular places, being stronger in one place and weaker in another. It picks snow up where it is strong and drops it where it is weak, so leading to these wind scoops. It is always windy in Antarctica, so snow cover is virtually never even and smooth.
