I think it is in the nature of Antarctica, that it seems that things were freer and more adventurous in the not too distant past before some bureaucratic interference stopped you really enjoying the full-on "Boys Own" adventure that you came down for.
Those who wintered in the times where dog teams were used to go on sledging journeys are particularly envied and for very good reason.
