"Relics" is a rather kind way of saying junk. When the whalers left, a large amount of equipment used to process the whales was left behind, this just sat around and slowly rusted. Over the years, the land was cleared of these relics largely by the time-trusted manner of throwing it in the sea and forgetting where it went.
