Men from the Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Carnarvon castle, a converted cruise liner, was sent South in 1943 to search for possible Japanese or German raiding parties (though it is unclear how raiding uninhabited islands might be of any use). She called at Deception Island, then moved up to Signy and made a courtesy call to the Argentines at Orcadas.
