Men from the Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Carnarvon castle, a converted cruise liner, was sent South in 1943 to search for possible Japanese or German raiding parties. They also looked for signs of Argentine claims of possession and substituted them with British ones.
The first hut was erected in Sandefjord Bay on Coronation Island, but soon abandoned due to the exposed position and difficulty of getting around the Island.
