Just like today - corporate
sponsorship was a big thing in the Heroic Age of Antarctic
exploration. Suppliers of foodstuffs and other supplies would expect
suitable publicity including pictures of their wares being unloaded
and used in Antarctica, hence boxes were very clearly and "loudly"
labelled for such photo opportunities.
Storage boxes were built into
internal walls to separate living, working and sleeping areas and to
afford some privacy to men who had taken to their bunks - the only
personal space they had in the hut which housed 25.
