The Memorial Cross, with McMurdo beyond.
The memorial otherwise known as Scott's Cross is a memorial to Scott's last polar expedition of 1910-13 on the Terra Nova when the South Pole party all perished on the way back from the South Pole reaching it a month after the Norwegian Roald Amundsen and his party. Inscribed on the cross are the names of those who died:
Lieutenant H. R. Bowers
Petty officer Edgar "Taff" Evans
Captain L. E. G. Oates
Captain R. F. Scott
Dr. E. A. WilsonThere are also the words of the poet Tennyson:
'To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield'
