From the sea ice, Mount Discovery on
the right and Black Island on the left. Both were discovered by the
British National Antarctic Expedition led by captain Scott in
1901-04.
Mount Discovery is a 2,680 m high
isolated volcanic cone named after Scott's expedition ship the
Discovery.
Black Island is about 12 miles long
and projects through the Ross Ice Shelf to a height of 1,040 meters,
it is named for its appearance. Black island is mainly ice free and
composed chiefly of black volcanic rock.
