Supplies left on the shelves of the hut
untouched since 1911. As today, much of the food was dried or canned.
The only preservation method not used for food brought from home was
freezing as in those days, refrigeration equipment was not sufficiently
well developed or reliable enough to keep the food frozen on the journey
south.
Many of these supplies, well preserved
over the years by the freezing conditions, had been as souvenirs over
the years by various visitors to the hut. Today the hut is preserved
as a category 1 historic site under the Antarctic Treaty and is actively
being preserved by the
Antarctic Heritage Trust
