La Belgica in the ice on March 5, 1898

Still mobile, but ultimately trapped by surrounding pack ice that cause the open water to freeze over, now that the ocean swell has died down. Falling temperatures signal that winter is on its way and the men of the Belgica must prepare for an enforced Antarctic winter. It is not clear however, whether this event was actually planned by the commander of the expedition Adrien de Gerlache - for the rest of the crew, it certainly wasn't!
